About us

The Trauma App was designed and developed nationally in collaboration with the four major trauma centres in NHS Scotland together with Daysix, a digital agency based in Edinburgh.

Have a read below to find out why the Trauma App was built and who was involved.

The problem

Trauma remains the fourth leading cause of death in western countries, causing significant economic, social and environmental impact on government and society. It is the leading cause of death for people under 40. The Advanced Trauma Life Support protocol (ATLS) is a standardised approach to trauma and used globally, however unacceptable levels of variation in care still exist.

An opportunity

Internationally, Emergency Departments are challenged by crowding, rising demand and increasingly complex patients. There is a great opportunity for innovative digital tools which offer support to clinicians to be implemented in trauma and cause step change to standards of care, reduce cost and variation, and improve patients quality of life.

The solution

The Trauma App is a robust digital solution, the result of a four year co-design and development process with trauma consultants and scribes across the four Major Trauma Centres in Scotland, with additional oversight from England, Wales and the US. It integrates seamlessly into existing clinical practice, with scribes switching from paper to an iPad.

Who built it?

The development of The Trauma App has been driven by the development of the Scottish Trauma Network (STN) and in partnership with Daysix, a software development agency based in Scotland. STN seeks to redesign care to improve patient outcomes by delivery of integrated, multi-speciality care to the severely injured.

Feedback

We absolutely love the Trauma App, it’s completely transforming the way we capture our trauma care data.

Shirley MulvaneyED Clinical Lead, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

We have a lot more confidence in the fidelity of the notes we’re taking when using the app vs paper. Events are quick to capture and much higher in detail. It's exciting to be able to collaborate and make suggestions for updates and see them feature in the app.

The Trauma App makes it much, much easier to document everything that nursing staff particularly need to know.

The app can record every single part of the trauma journey. It's intuitive smart user interface design is a game changer in documenting trauma care in a fast paced trauma care environment.

Dr Alan WhitelawConsultant, Emergency Medicine, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

It’s clear, easy and quick. The observation charts mean that staff can see trends in observations which is invaluable… As soon as staff can see how easy it is to use and how well it works, they are usually hooked!

Joanne RichardsonTrauma Coordinator, Alder Hey Children's Hospital

The app is easy to navigate through and it actually prompts me in the midst of the madness to remember things.
