“Inside The Emergency Room” with Mark Lilley
Mark Lilley is the Major Trauma Coordinator at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, who went live with the Trauma App in 2022, and who were instrumental in helping refine the paediatric functionality of the App.
We believe digital innovation and better data can transform healthcare. That’s why we created the Trauma App in collaboration with Scotland’s most advanced emergency care clinicians.
The app has been designed and deployed for Major Trauma clinicians in Emergency Medicine, to digitally document patient care.
In this series we’re interviewing clinicians using the Trauma App in their Emergency Department, finding out the reality of frontline medical care and the difference that digital innovation makes.

Marks insights:
What drew you to the medical profession?
I have been a nurse for 24 years – I came to nursing straight from high school and straight into University. It was a good fit for me and I have never looked back!
What particularly led you towards Major Trauma nursing and the MTC coordinator role?
I worked in A&E for about 14 years – initially as a nurse, then as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. As an ENP, I only saw trauma patients. I have always been more inclined towards trauma than general medicine type patients. When I heard early on about this new notion of redesigning trauma working in Scotland, I knew I had to be part of it. So, I chapped on doors and made my intentions clear that I wanted to be part of this change. I am now 6 years in role as a Major Trauma Coordinator.
How has being a paediatric trauma nurse made a difference to your home/family life?
Confession – we have a trampoline! My two kids love it. We have strict rules, e.g. how many can jump at once, etc. We have other rules too, like wearing helmets when sledging! We want them to have fun but also minimise risks. What really makes me nervous, though, is my son starting secondary school next year. Road safety is my biggest worry, as it’s the leading cause of major trauma for children and young people.
The best thing about your job is?
Working with kids has much more highs than lows! Kids don’t have time to be unwell – they get up and get on with it!
Describe the Trauma App in 3 words
Easy to use.
What’s it like using the Trauma App during a case?
It’s fluid and intuitive. You don’t often have to look to see where to record/document something. It is usually intuitively where you want it to be.
What feature of the App brings you the most satisfaction?
The bloods screen for major haemorrhage. It is very clear and easy to keep on top of.
With the Trauma App now being 2 years in at RHC, what data are you seeing? What is the potential impact?
The app is great at bringing real time trends to life – things that you intuitively know, you can now demonstrate. We have been using the data to influence our teaching requirements – both with using the app, but also for any areas of ongoing focus that can cause time delays to moving forward.
What are your hopes for the future of healthcare?
Being able to bring bespoke solutions to help meet the individual needs to patients – if people don’t need to come to or stay in hospital, then to get care solutions that help meet their own needs.
What would you say is your biggest achievement so far in work/life or both.
My biggest work life achievement has been engaging with innovation. That started with the production of concussion guidance that is now used UK wide. Innovation brought me to The Trauma App and having a key role in the production of the paediatric bundle and continues with ongoing innovations projects. Out with work, it is definitely having a lovely wife and awesome children.
